The Flatcoated Retriever Association of Victoria (FCRAV) was officially formed on 11th November 1976 after considerable effort by a combined working party consisting of Flat Coated Retriever and Curly Coated Retriever owners. Affiliation was achieved with the Kennel Control Council of Victoria, now known as the Victorian Canine Association in the same year.  Several of the original 1976 Committee still serve.  The Association was incorporated in July 1992.

The FCRAV is the only club representing the breed in Australia.  It's members are comprised of Conformation exhibitors, Obedience and Agility Trial Athletes and Retrieving Trial  Competitors, some of which participate in all avenues of competition. Many of our members do not compete in any field but provide a staunch support group of individuals and families that own a cherished pet and family companion; a Flat Coated Retriever.

The Association maintains an Hereditary Diseases policy currently aimed at Hip Dysplasia.  The policy is under constant review and shall shortly reflect further breeding recommendations covering Elbows and Eyes.  The Association's puppy referral program is only available to breeders who actively participate in this quality control program.
